The Living Room

The front entrance of the house comes into the principal living area of the house, which consists of a large room with a tiled, wood burning stove and an entire window wall which has a stunning view of the Cascade Mountains in the near distance and the valley that you have just driven through in the intermediate foreground and right in front is the second growth forest that come up from the creek bed to surround the house.  In the far distance the famous White Horse Glacier is visible.  White Horse Mountain rises 6800 ft. into the heavens.

In the corner there is a wood-burning stove.  It is set up with the slate quarry tile surround, so on one side you can put either a log container, which you might bring in, or the logs can be stored on the deck.  Propane can be added to the stove, if desired.  The propane is plumbed to the adjacent porch. The door is set up so when you bring the logs in you aren’t bringing dirt through the house and the logs can go directly onto a rack. The logs can be stored dry under or on the deck.

There is abundant wood on the property.  Red alder which is an excellent wood for burning, and is abundantly available on the property.  The wood stove utilizes any dead fall on the property using the fallen wood as an energy source.  On the surrounding 6.7 acres of wooded land, wood is an readily available and abundant renewable resource.

The Kitchen

This is the command station for the house.    There is a double sink on one side and a single sink on the other side to be used for a bar or prep area. The stove is a Jenn-air dual fuel – electric ovens and gas top.  An electric oven will give you far more evenness of heat when cooking.  It also works as a convection oven. There is a  Broan fan overhead.

The countertops are Silestone – a quartz resin stone 4 times stronger than granite.  It is antibacterial.  There is a 10-year warranty on the counter tops.  It is scratch resistant.

The surround tiles are all hand-made ceramic

The hanging fixture on the ceiling gives more light in the kitchen.  Under the light is a place for a standing butcher block. The kitchen is designed as a 2-person kitchen so that you can both work around that on the periphery. The new owners can also have their pots hanging from the center rack.

All of the cabinets were custom made and designed - they are all 3/4 inch material and all the edging is made with 3mm material, 3 times thicker and stronger than ordinary cabinets. In addition – each one of the corners has been hand-sanded to smooth the points – because if they just cut it, there is a sharp edge, so all of the cabinets have been hand sanded with 250 grit sandpaper.

The refrigerator space is pre-plumbed for an icemaker.

The kitchen has pull-out shelves designed with all drawers on 100% extension. There are two Lazy-Susans – one on either side of the stove. This kitchen has storage, storage, storage….. it is a first class kitchen.  There is a Brohan overhead lighting fixture for the stove, with a fan that vents directly to the outside. It provides for two levels of lighting in the kitchen area.  In addition, it has exaggerated height over the stove top – there is an extra 4 inches so the chef can deal with large pots on the stove.

There are Jenn-Aire appliances and Kohler fixtures throughout the house.

The Family Room or Dining Room

The family room is large enough for a dining table, as well as space for a television or entertainment center. The room could also be an art studio because it has great natural full northern light.

The Master Bedroom

This is a moderate sized room, in keeping with BuiltGreen principles. There is an overhead fan with a remote control. The fan is designed to recirculate the heat in the winter and also to cool the room in the summer. The room has access to a screened sun porch so you can open windows. The room gets cross ventilation this way and from the sides, picking up a breeze from almost any direction.  There is the same stunning view as the living room of White Horse Mountain and the glacier and the changing trees – lots of deciduous trees out there plus the agricultural land in the distance. All the carpeting is natural fiber, low maintenance, with low or no emissions.

The Master Bath

There is a walk-in closet and a full bath, with 2 sinks, and the dual flush toilets discussed below.  There is a large storage area in the bathroom. All bathroom floors are Marmoleum throughout the house.

The Screened Porch

The porch has access to the outside, and a door into the living room. There are large opening windows from the bedroom, with screened porch windows.

The decks are TREX – TREX will never rot or need refinishing.  This decking is recommended because it doesn’t have creosote or other wood poisons in it, so it doesn’t poison the land or the home inhabitants.

There is plumbed-in propane on the porch for BBQ, so you don’t have to take tanks in for refill. The large propane tank is located near the bridge for easy filling by a delivery truck.

The 3/4 Bath

On the first floor, there is an additional 1/2 bath, plus a shower in the laundry room area.

Going up the Stairs

The landing area at the half way point on the stairs is quite large and was designed to provide space for a day bed. It could be used as a private reading area, or a play area for children, out of the main traffic aisles, but close enough to the kitchen to be monitored by a parent or guardian. The open window space from the kitchen to this area provides a pass-through for refreshments.

There is access to a large storage area that is under the eaves of the roof in this area.

Continuing up the Stairs

At the top of the stairs, there is a sliding pocket door, which closes off the entire upper level, saving heating this area when it is not needed.

The Second Floor

There are two bedrooms on this level, with a full bath to share. Each bedroom has adequate closet space. (One window is designed for egress in an emergency.) All the doors in the house are solid wood doors, to provide additional sound-proofing and protection.

All the windows in the house are double-paned, wood inside and vinyl outside, so you don't have to paint the exterior.

The Heating System for Greenhaven Log Home

The house features the unusual and extraordinary Econo-Heat economy panel electric heaters imported from South Africa.

The main feature of these heaters is that they consumes about 50% of the power required for other heating methods while providing warm, glowing heat near to the living areas and occupying very little space in the process.

Water Saving, Dual Flush Toilets

All the toilets at Greenhaven Log Home are the Caroma dual flush system from Australia. These toilets use very little water.

There are two buttons on the top of each toilet, one of which gives a half flush, the other gives a full flush.  There is serious water conservation with this kind of toilet. This is a BuiltGreen principle to conserve water, so you are not loading your septic system with excess water. These toilets use only .8 gallons per total flush.

Flooring throughout Greenhaven Log Home

Floors in the major traffic areas are finished in cork. Cork floors have been around for many years – the government used to use them in all of their office buildings -  they are very, very, very hard wearing.  The advantage of cork floors in the house is that they are absolutely non allergenic, they are warm and soft to walk on and they don’t made that terrible sound as wood floors, and even if you walk on these with high heels the cork floors recover themselves.  Cork flooring is very easy to maintain and lasts indefinitely.

All of the carpeting in the house is natural fiber. Carpet is used in the bedrooms and on the stairs.

All bathroom floors are Marmoleum throughout the house.

The Interior Finish

All interior wood surfaces are finished with Penofin. Penofin is an oil penetration wood preservative with a low VOC rating.

You can paint directly over Penofin.  You can put on as many coats of Penofin as you want, the more coats you put on the more luster it gets.  The front door is treated with Penofin. See Exterior Features page for more information on logs used in this home, and on the finish used on the logs.
